    Regulating Vendor-Client Workarounds: An Information Brokering Approach

    Under pressure to deliver value, whilst driving down costs, shared service units (SSUs) themselves are turning to outsourcing. Despite efforts to manage both relationships, it can be the case that the SSU’s internal clients communicate directly with an external vendor, exchanging information which bypasses the SSU. The use of such illegitimate communication channels lead to what we refer to in this paper as Vendor-Client (V-C) workarounds. How units cope with V-C workarounds to limit detrimental impacts, whilst encouraging or accommodating those of potential benefit, has been largely understudied. This working paper draws on preliminary data, from the shared finance unit of a global logistics organization, to answer our main research question: How do SSUs regulate existing Vendor-Client workarounds to benefit information flow? In answering the question, we take an Information Brokering perspective to help explain the how SSUs leverage their position as intermediaries and manage information interfaces to regulate workarounds

    Knowledge Overlap in Nearshore Service Delivery

    Multinational organizations now increasingly source tasks from nearshore units. While, offshore locations promise superior opportunities for cost savings and access to large scale, flexible workforces, organisations are increasingly distributing work much closer to home (Deliotte 2014). One of the biggest attractions of nearshore locations is proximity. In principle nearshore units are geographically, temporally, and culturally closer to their onshore counterparts reducing the cost and coordination effort to manage distance. Despite the anticipation that onshore units and nearshore units will operate effectively from distinctive and separate knowledge bases, they continue to be bogged down by knowledge overlaps. Knowledge overlaps (KOs) are a duplication of information and know-how of specific migrated activities that allow onshore units to retain control of nearshore units. In this paper, we draw on data from an on-going qualitative case study to demonstrate how nearshore units manage KOs and relinquish control of processes

    Information brokering in globally distributed work: a workarounds perspective

    Past studies have so far taken an interest in the two important roles intermediaries play to effectively broker information. One, where intermediaries connect information between multiple users. Two, where they protect information being transmitted. Common to these two streams is the assumption that efficient brokering takes place when information is visible. However, in practice, information exchanges bypass the intermediary for various reasons. Despite this, existing research has paid little attention how intermediaries broker effectively when information is not visible. Drawing on a qualitative case study in a globally distributed finance function we explore how intermediaries broker in a complex, distributed setting that creates conditions to distort and hide information. We contribute to brokering literature by offering a new third role: regulating information. Our research also provides insights for intermediary management by illuminating the normative complexity of information workarounds which aid problem-solving but leads to information hiding

    Paradox and the negotiation of tensions in globally distributed work

    Tensions are a major source of communication problems, coordination issues and conflict in globally distributed work (GDW). In this paper we argue that extant literature falls short of addressing tensions in GDW at two levels. First, it fails to fully account for the intrinsic and entrenched nature of tensions in GDW, suggesting instead that they can be resolved or made to disappear. Second, it does not examine the key interactions amongst different kinds of tensions. Drawing on qualitative data from a distributed finance organization and applying concepts from paradox theory, we show how globally distributed units negotiate knowledge, power and identity tensions in collaborative work. The findings illuminate how a sequential enactment of both formal and informal solutions can better address tensions and generate collaborative opportunities in GDW. Building on the findings, we develop a phasal model of tension evolution and management in GDW which explains how tensions evolve from a phase of suppression through to a phase of attenuation. We demonstrate the interactions of knowledge-power-identity tensions against a background of defensive, interactive and collaborative behaviors, and suggest several practical implications for GDW practice

    Measurement of bend sprinting kinematics with three-dimensional motion capture : a test-retest reliability study

    Sprint velocity decreases on the bend when compared with the straight, therefore understanding technique during bend sprinting could have important implications for aiding race performance. Few bend sprinting studies have used optoelectronic cameras to investigate kinematic variables. Limited published evidence regarding the reliability of marker sets in conditions representative of elite bend sprinting makes model selection difficult. Therefore, a test-retest protocol was conducted to establish the reliability and minimum detectable difference of a lower limb and trunk marker set during bend sprinting (radius: 36.5 m). Six participants completed five, 60 m trials at maximum effort, with data collected at 38 - 45 m. This was repeated 2 - 7 days later. Spatio-temporal (e.g. contact time) and kinematic variables (e.g. peak joint angles) were evaluated. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were used to determine the between- and within-day reliability. Between-day reliability (ICC 3, k) was fair to excellent for all variables. Compared to between-day, within-day reliability demonstrated stronger agreement for the majority of variables. Thus, same-day data collection is preferable. It has been established that the marker set is reliable for future use. In addition, the minimal detectable difference was calculated which serves as useful reference for future research in bend sprinting

    Effects of the pattern of glucocorticoid replacement on neural processing, emotional reactivity and well-being in healthy male individuals:study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

    BACKGROUND: Deviation from the physiological glucocorticoid dynamics (circadian and underlying ultradian rhythmicity) is a common characteristic of various neuropsychiatric and endocrine disorders as well as glucocorticoid-based therapeutics. These states may be accompanied by neuropsychiatric symptomatology, suggesting continuous dynamic glucocorticoid equilibrium is essential for brain homeostasis. METHODS/DESIGN: The study consists of two parts. The preliminary stage of the study aims to validate (technically and pharmacologically) and optimise three different patterns of systemic cortisol administration in man. These patterns are based on the combinatory administration of metyrapone, to suppress endogenous cortisol production, and concurrent hydrocortisone replacement. The second, subsequent, core part of the study is a randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover study, where participants (healthy male individuals aged 18–60 years) will undergo all three hydrocortisone replacement schemes. During these infusion regimes, we plan a number of neurobehavioural tests and imaging of the brain to assess neural processing, emotional reactivity and perception, mood and self-perceived well-being. The psychological tests include: ecological momentary assessment, P1vital Oxford Emotional Test Battery and Emotional Potentiated Startle Test, Leeds Sleep Evaluation Questionnaire and the visual working memory task (n-back). The neuroimaging protocol combines magnetic resonance sequences that capture data related to the functional and perfusion status of the brain. DISCUSSION: Results of this clinical trial are designed to evaluate the impact (with possible mechanistic insights) of different patterns of daily glucocorticoid dynamics on neural processing and reactivity related to emotional perception and mood. This evidence should contribute to the optimisation of the clinical application of glucocorticoid-based therapeutics.     \tau\to \mu \bar{\nu_i} \nu_i decay in the general two Higgs doublet model

    We study \tau\to \mu \bar{\nu_i} \nu_i, i=e,\mu,\tau decay in the model III version of the two Higgs doublet model. We calculated the BR at the order of the magnitude of 10^{-6}-10^{-4} for the intermediate values of the Yukawa couplings. Furthermore, we predict the upper limit of the coupling for the \tau-h^0 (A^0)-\tau transition as \sim 0.3 in the case that the BR is \sim 10^{-6}. We observe that the experimental result of the process under consideration can give comprehensive information about the physics beyond the standard model and the free parameters existing.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

    Vocational rehabilitation to enhance return to work after trauma (ROWTATE): protocol for a non-randomised single-arm mixed-methods feasibility study

    BackgroundTraumatic injuries are common amongst working age adults. Survivors often experience physical and psychological problems, reduced quality of life and difficulty returning to work. Vocational rehabilitation improves work outcomes for a range of conditions but evidence of effectiveness for those with traumatic injuries is lacking. This study assesses feasibility of delivering a vocational rehabilitation intervention to enhance return to work and improve quality of life and wellbeing in people with at least moderate trauma to inform design of a definitive randomised controlled trial (RCT).MethodsNon-randomised, single arm, multi-centre mixed-methods feasibility study with nested case studies and qualitative study. The case studies comprise interviews, observations of clinical contacts and review of clinical records. The qualitative study comprises interviews and/or focus groups. Participants will be recruited from two UK major trauma centres. Participants will comprise 40 patients aged 16-69 with an injury severity score of >8 who will receive the intervention and complete questionnaires. Interviews will be conducted with 10 patients and their occupational therapists (OTs), clinical psychologists (CPs), employers and commissioners of rehabilitation services. Fidelity will be assessed in up to six patients by observations of OT and CP – patient contacts, review of patient records and intervention case report forms. OT and CP training will be evaluated using questionnaires and competence to deliver the intervention assessed using a team objected structured clinical examination and written task. Patients participating in and those declining participation in the study will be invited to take part in interviews/focus groups to explore barriers and facilitators to recruitment and retention. Outcomes include recruitment and retention rates, intervention fidelity, OT and CP competence to deliver the intervention, experiences of delivering or receiving the intervention and factors likely to influence definitive trial delivery.Discussion Effective vocational rehabilitation interventions to enhance return to work amongst trauma patients are urgently needed because return to work is often delayed, with detrimental effects on health, financial stability, healthcare resource use and wider society.     Remarkable fly (Diptera) diversity in a patch of Costa Rican cloud forest : Why inventory is a vital science

    Study of all flies (Diptera) collected for one year from a four-hectare (150 x 266 meter) patch of cloud forest at 1,600 meters above sea level at Zurqui de Moravia, San Jose Province, Costa Rica (hereafter referred to as Zurqui), revealed an astounding 4,332 species. This amounts to more than half the number of named species of flies for all of Central America. Specimens were collected with two Malaise traps running continuously and with a wide array of supplementary collecting methods for three days of each month. All morphospecies from all 73 families recorded were fully curated by technicians before submission to an international team of 59 taxonomic experts for identification. Overall, a Malaise trap on the forest edge captured 1,988 species or 51% of all collected dipteran taxa (other than of Phoridae, subsampled only from this and one other Malaise trap). A Malaise trap in the forest sampled 906 species. Of other sampling methods, the combination of four other Malaise traps and an intercept trap, aerial/hand collecting, 10 emergence traps, and four CDC light traps added the greatest number of species to our inventory. This complement of sampling methods was an effective combination for retrieving substantial numbers of species of Diptera. Comparison of select sampling methods (considering 3,487 species of non-phorid Diptera) provided further details regarding how many species were sampled by various methods. Comparison of species numbers from each of two permanent Malaise traps from Zurqui with those of single Malaise traps at each of Tapanti and Las Alturas, 40 and 180 km distant from Zurqui respectively, suggested significant species turnover. Comparison of the greater number of species collected in all traps from Zurqui did not markedly change the degree of similarity between the three sites, although the actual number of species shared did increase. Comparisons of the total number of named and unnamed species of Diptera from four hectares at Zurqui is equivalent to 51% of all flies named from Central America, greater than all the named fly fauna of Colombia, equivalent to 14% of named Neotropical species and equal to about 2.7% of all named Diptera worldwide. Clearly the number of species of Diptera in tropical regions has been severely underestimated and the actual number may surpass the number of species of Coleoptera. Various published extrapolations from limited data to estimate total numbers of species of larger taxonomic categories (e.g., Hexapoda, Arthropoda, Eukaryota, etc.) are highly questionable, and certainly will remain uncertain until we have more exhaustive surveys of all and diverse taxa (like Diptera) from multiple tropical sites. Morphological characterization of species in inventories provides identifications placed in the context of taxonomy, phylogeny, form, and ecology. DNA barcoding species is a valuable tool to estimate species numbers but used alone fails to provide a broader context for the species identified.Peer reviewe
